hey...
i was talking to some friends tonight about the movie. when i saw it at the ashland film festival, it was paired with another movie about homeless people that are living in a landfill in the bay area... and how THIS culture treats people with nothing (eviction and harassment).
and it got me thinking tonight. what if we took a bunch of homeless people to the burn... and just let them experience a different way.....
no money to ask for... bring your grocery cart and have a ball. a nothing without you camp for the homeless.
maybe the folks down at BM HQ would even grant the tickets for free!
whadaya think?

Re: nothing without you idea
Mon, October 18, 2004 - 11:21 AMHmm,
Who is going to volunteer to drive the bus to bring them in? Or will we need to pay a driver and give him extra hazard pay due to the smell?
Who is going to be the one to de-lice them all before we bring them in?? I already do my share at the hospital when they need to be admitted, so I won't volunteer.
Lets hope that they don't donate their non-BM clothing back to the Boutique when they get their new clothes, or should we have a burn on the calendar just for their old clothes?
Do we make them shower before going?
Do we actually bring them back or do we leave them in the Nevada desert and call it a "relocation project"?
We should place them right next to Sanctuary or the medical tent so that they can get prompt attention when they go on alcoholic binges from all of the free booze on the Playa.
We should make sure to have extra mental health professionals on hand for when they all have mental breakdowns when we drop them back off at the dump in SF.
I could go on, but......

(Sorry, I just couldn't resist being the realist!!)

Re: nothing without you idea
Mon, October 18, 2004 - 3:55 PMjust leave all that to the good people of the playa.
thats EXACTLY my point.
these people don't need a dose of realism. they have plenty of that as it is...
why should just rich fuckers like us get to go? maybe a little magic would go along way for someone who is so fucking mired in "realism" that they can't find a warm place to sleep.
who is going to volunteer to drive the bus?
i will
will YOU help get them a drink if they get the shakes?
for you, a little trust in the heart of the people of the city might go a long way in mending your cynasism. maybe i'm delusional... but the city sure went out to ted... but maybe thats just for folks who don't "stink"... or go on alchoholic binges. (assuming you don't go on alchoholic binges ted?... :)
as far as making them shower. where on your ticket does it say that the burningman is only for people who meet your hygenic requirements? does anyone make YOU shower before you go to the burn? what is the point of that statement other than lumping all homeless people into the Stink Pile?
i don't think anyone would "make them shower"... but i'm betting that many people would offer one.. and thats much more than they might find in reality.
relocation center? i'll pretend you really didn't mean to go there.
or you know what...maybe that asswhole in piss clear was right... and burningman is only for rich people who want to explore their egos.
does anyone have anything positive to say?

Re: nothing without you idea
Tue, October 19, 2004 - 2:59 PMHi Cole,
Just to give you a background on where I am coming from: I am an ER and ICU nurse working in downtown San Francisco. I have also worked in LA and Seattle. I work on a day to day basis with the homeless. I talk to them, treat their physical and mental illnessess, provide them food, get them new clothing and get them help via social services. I also delouse, de-scabies (??), remove their clothes and shoes and bathe them. I have up-close and personal experience of the problems of homelessness.
So YOU will drive the bus, will you? You mentioned, disparagingly, several times my comment about their smell. I have been in enclosed spaces with the homeless on many occasions and it is NOT fun. They do not give off an odor, they give off a stench. If you had 20 homeless on a bus with you, you would PUKE unless you had a gas mask and some deodorizer inside the mask. This is not a tirade against the homeless, this is a fact from pure experience. You have NO IDEA about how bad the smell would be. Its bad enough to make me get the dry heaves and make my eyes water and I am not squeamish in any way.
You asked, "will YOU help get them a drink if they get the shakes?" No, I wouldn't. I don't feel that enabling an alcoholic is appropriate. I WOULD get them some benzos and help them to get treatment.
You said, "these people don't need a dose of realism. they have plenty of that as it is... " Yeah, so you take them from the literal garbage dump and put them into the Garden of Eden. I've got a great life and have no mental illnesses and I had post-burn depression for 2 weeks. These people have no coping mechanisms and often no support systems,as such they would probably go into a crippling depression, have a psycotic break and/or commit suicide when you drop them back off at the dump.
You cannot compare Ted's experiment to the experiment that you are proposing. Ted was ONE person, responsible for himself who was fully prepared to accept the consequences of his own actions. Will YOU accept the consequences of the actions of a mentally ill alcoholic out on the playa? Will YOU have to explain it to his mother when this homeless guy commits suicide because you showed him a perfect life.... and he gets to go back and live in the dump?
And yes, the comment about relocating them was intended to be tongue in cheek.
Both of us have opinions on the causes and cures of homelessness, but this is not the forum for that. You ASKED for opinions on your idea and I gave it. Yes, loving-kindness would go a long way and mean a lot to this population, but BM is NOT the forum to do this. You COULD cause a lot of happiness, but you could also cause a lot of misery for these people and a lot of problems at BM. The law of unintended consequences is and well.

Re: nothing without you idea
Wed, October 20, 2004 - 5:45 AMthanks for your thoughtful reply.
the idea was intended to spur discussion on the issue of whether or not burningman is only for rich people only. and just how the city WOULD take in those people.
but for purposes of actually doing this?....
not all homeless people are stench laden crazy people. i know... i've volunteered in shelters before. as a nurse in downtown SF, i'm sure you come into daily contact with the worst situations imaginable. i'm not suggesting we relocate entire wards of hospitals. perhaps a basic health and self sufficiency test could determine people who might be better suited to the rigors of the playa for thier own safety. i've spent time among the homeless in eugene and portland, and although there are some desperate situations (like those that you work with daily), there are many others who are in much better shape. many are simply free thinkers who CHOOSE to opt out of our consumeristic feeding frenzy. whos to say who is crazy? i think the culture they are dropping out of is the crazy creature.
i think i could find 10 non-stenchy, relatively sane (whateverthefuck that means), homeless people that would be willing to step out of their world and into ours for a time. or are they already living it... without the goodness and safety of blackrock city? i'm betting that the burningman exprience would profoundly effect them... as it does those of us with homes and a regular food supply.
i also realize that these folks are people... and not little rats for my crazy experiment. i have a lot of respect and good will toward those less fortunate and i wouldn't take someone into the desert without making certain that they would be cared for.
thanks again for your reply.
